Birmingham Lifeguards Crowned Champions Again!
A group of lifeguards from across Birmingham were recently crowned champions of an intense competition held at Stoke Mandeville Stadium.
The event, which was ran in partnership with the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSSUK), saw teams of lifeguards from across the country come together to compete in events such as CPR, Bleep Test, Reaction Testing, and Situational Awareness.
After a full day of competition, it was the Birmingham team – who also won the 2022 games - that came out on top. Team captain, Mike Ryan, said: “We came to win so I chose a balanced team which had both theoretical and practical knowledge and understanding. We felt confident going into the tournament but were aware of the extra pressure retaining our title.”
The winning team – representing the Birmingham Community Leisure Trust - was made-up of Mike, Marta Hulin, Jacob Cope, Kim Ash and Tom Brandon.
Mike added: “I believe the Lifeguard Competition gives us the chance to test our skills against our peers and bringing that competitive edge helps develop and nurture skills even further.
“It was a great event and we loved participating We were delighted to win, and it’s put an arrow on our backs when we compete to win the hat-trick next year!”
Robert Gofton, CEO of RLSS UK, said: “I had the privilege of attending the lifeguard competition at Stoke Mandeville Stadium. It was amazing to see the passion the teams showed for lifesaving and lifeguarding - the event really challenged their skills but was delivered in a really friendly and inclusive way.”
